Morton ran through most of the Mid-Illini when they started the 2023 season 8-0, were tied for first in the conference and appeared to be contenders for a state championship.
The Potters relied heavily on their defense and running game, which helped them beat opponents by an averaged of more than 20 points, which led them to the best start the program had seen since the turn of the millennium.
Despite their dominant start, the Potters faced a setback due to self-described overconfidence. They lost to conference rivals Washington in week nine and New Lenox Providence Catholic in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
“Last season, I learned that we can’t go in thinking every team is like the last team,” senior running back Seandon Buffington said. “I’d say it was definitely a confidence thing. We were so confident that we didn’t think we could lose.”
