Big days from Stevens, Weiland help Normal U-High defend home turf, advance to 4A quarterfinals

Rainy conditions at Hancock Stadium on Saturday night could’ve hampered many performances, especially those from teams who are accustomed to running on all cylinders.


But the night could not dampen a Normal U-High masterclass as the Pioneers defeated Richland County 48-13 in IHSA Class 4A playoff action, clinching their first quarterfinal berth since 2013. 


Mother Nature could not stop a spectacular performance from senior quarterback Alek Weiland, who went 12-for-18 for 207 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air and recorded 124 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. 


“I think I had a lot of time in the pocket,” Weiland said. “When me and our running backs ran the ball we had a lot of blocks. It was just a well-rounded performance.”
