Normal U-High volleyball player Rachel Ogunleye and Eureka boys golfer Luke Martin won the voting for the first CSM Fall Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Jake Weston State Farm, for the week of Aug. 21-26.
Ogunleye earned CSM Girls Athlete of the Week with 63 percent of the 996 votes cast. Other nominees included Esma Frieden (Metamora volleyball), Sophia Ramirez (Washington girls cross country) Ella Coulter (Peoria Notre Dame girls golf) and Marley Schrof (Normal West girls tennis)
The Vanderbilt commit helped Normal U-High go 4-1 at the Plainfield North Invite last weekend, racking up 26 kills, four blocks and a spot on the all-tournament team. Ogunleye posted a team-high 13 kills in the Pioneers' three-set win over Chatham (Glenwood) on Wednesday and led the team yet again with nine kills in U-High's season opener against Bloomington.
Martin earned CSM Boys Athlete of the Week, receiving 42 percent of the 702 votes cast on the boys side. Other nominees included Mason Boles (Eureka football), Brett Michel (Morton football), Bernie Winne (Washington boys soccer) and Louis Fournier (Canton boys soccer).
Martin has played the whole season so far as Eureka's No. 1 golfer, and for good reason. He shot an even-par 34 for the first time in his life last Monday in a duel against Farmington at Kaufman Park Golf Course, boosting the Hornets to a 155-218 win. Martin has won each event that he's played in this year, medaling at the Midland Invite with a 73 and in a duel against IVC with a 38. He currently owns a 9-hole scoring average of 36.3, good enough for third among all individual boys golfers in the CSM coverage area.
