PEKIN – Energetic. Strong. Underrated.

Those are the words that members of Pekin’s girls basketball team used to describe their team this year – and its recent success shows they’re not wrong.

The Mid-Illini is as strong as its been in girls basketball in a long time. Morton and Washington are both state-ranked with no signs of slowing down and five other teams are above .500 with two weeks left in the regular season. All eight teams have at least 11 wins.

Identifying the best team outside of Morton and Washington is a crapshoot, but the Dragons have plenty of reasons to keep eyes drawn to them down the stretch.

“Our season goal is to win a regional and that's kind of one of the things I keep putting out in front of them,” Pekin head coach Brett McGinnis said. “But a one or two-seed is really, really important. We’ve got to hopefully get a few more down the stretch and then I feel comfortable.”
